Where is my voice in AI?

CAPTION: AI HUB / PUBLIC SPEAKING OLIVIA HESLINGA

I've had the pleasure of presenting to the Danish public, the ecosystems and tools here in Denmark, as well as the latest developments around this space. Special thanks to AI HUB community and Talent Garden for the platform to share my latest research.

My main message was to encourage critical thought in how we will choose to use AI moving forward -- as an individual, employee, manager, citizen and society at large.

A message from Murat Durmus, who I follow on Linkedin, gives some simple but profound guidelines to help with Aligned AI. Not from a technical perspective, but an ethical one. In the actions and behaviour we choose to embody, how we utilize AI as a tool for GOOD rather than replacement of our Humanness.

AI POLICY TOOLS AND LIBRARY OF RESOURCES

There are a couple of resources I wanted to highlight regarding compliance and legal frameworks that developers and citizens alike should be aware and diligently checking on in this ever-changing, technical landscape.

OECD.AI POLICY OBSERVATORY

OECD.AI is a forum where countries and stakeholder groups join forces to shape trustworthy AI. In 2019, it facilitated the OECD AI Principles, the first intergovernmental standard on AI. These principles also served as the basis for the G20 AI Principles.

GLOBAL AI REGULATION TRACKER

The next tool I would recommend is from Raymound Sun, a technical lawyer, that has made a great tool to track changing legal frameworks around the world within different technical fields such as Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property.

Legal Resources for AI

The EU AI Act introduces new obligations to entities located within the EU and elsewhere. The EU AI Act introduces new obligations to entities located within the EU and elsewhere.

EU AI Act Compliance Checker:

This website is maintained by the Future of Life Institute (FLI). FLI is an independent non-profit working to reduce large-scale, extreme risks from transformative technologies. They also aim for the future development and use of these technologies to be beneficial to all. Their work includes grantmaking, educational outreach, and policy engagement.

DIGIPHILE LAW

Last but not least, Phil Lee, technical lawyer and thought leader that writes useful and concise infographics regarding legalities around EU AI ACT and practical legal applications.

HOW DOES DENMARK DEMOCRATIZE DEVELOPMENT OF AI?

It is imperative we highlight the local and national resources to empower citizens' to stay actively engaged in the debate and discussion around AI development and societal implications. It starts with public education, industry training, knowledge sharing across disciplines and expertise, as well as massive coordination across borders.

I listed some interesting initiatives locally in Denmark that citizens can choose to participate in or actively seek further knowledge and debate. Please reach out to me if your organization does similar public outreach to add to this list.

BEDREINNOVATION.DK

bedreinnovation.dk you will find everything about the GTS institutes' performance contracts with the Ministry of Higher Education and Science. The purpose is to create transparency about what the public investment in GTS is used for.

Here you can follow the entire process from the departments presenting proposals for new focus areas and inviting the public to participate in a debate on the proposals. You can see which proposals end up receiving public funding, and you can keep up with news about activities as well as participate by adding your 2cents by posing questions and partnerships that can potentially help in the projects.

AI DENMARK ECOSYSTEM

AI Denmark inspires and helps SMEs get started faster with leveraging data and AI tools in their digital transformation process. Their goal is to make digitalisation and artificial intelligence practical and easy to understand.

They have a great interactive AI INNOVATION MAP that builds transparency on which companies are utilizing AI, what AI companies are out there, as well as the latest news in Denmark and EU regarding AI and best practices.

Applied AI Lunch Talks - DTU Science Park

Another great resources for the public to stay engaged and informed is the DTU - APPLIED AI LUNCHTALKS. It allows for experts and industry leaders to discuss current research and applications of AI and ML. This webinar is recorded and posted for your convenience and a great resource library.

ADD - Algoritmer, Data og Demokrati

The ADD project works to strengthen democracy through digital development through research, increased technology understanding, digital education and dialogue.

They have open calls for public focus groups and workshops as well as social behavioural analysis regarding AI.

Agency for Digital Government (Digitaliseringsstyrelsen -

The Agency for Digital Government was established in 2011. The Agency is in charge of implementing the Danish Government’s policies for developing the digital public sector as well as large parts of the Danish digital service infrastructure. Get the latest news on how AI is being implemented and used in our every day lives.

Another promising AI projected headed by them is, the sprogteknologi.dk initiative. Use of the platform is to help build transparency and give interested parties easy access to metadata about Danish language resources, and metadata must therefore:

  • Copied, distributed and published

  • Modified and combined with other material

  • Used commercially and non-commercially

On sprogteknologi.dk you will find 192 language resources from 38 different organizations and they encourage to build on existing knowledge to create new solutions in areas such as speech recognition, text analysis and language comprehension. In many contexts, these are key technologies for the development of artificial intelligence.

Datavejviser.dk

Datavejviser.dk is a catalogue of available data from the public sector. It is run by the Agency for Digitisation. Here you can find information about both open data and data that have special access and use conditions. The Data Directory currently contains descriptions of some of the most commonly used public data. We are continuously working to get more available data from the public sector described in the catalogue.

The aim is to make access to public sector data simpler for businesses, researchers, authorities and civil society. The Data Directory offers the user a reliable overview and then guides them to the platforms from which the data itself is available. This could be the Danish Environmental Portal, the Statbank or the Data Distributor.

DEMOCRACY X

DEMOCRACY X, aims to support societal actors in addressing significant challenges related to democracy, technology, and climate. With over 50 experts, they specialize in involving citizens and stakeholders in decision-making processes, equipping them to contribute effectively to societal issues. Their approach includes academic project leaders and a team that works on local and international projects, ensuring solutions are sustainable and community-focused.

The host monthly get togethers (EVENTS) to present different research and stakeholders around Denmark to help build transparency, community, and share thoughts and ideas on how we can move forward as a society.

This list is a small summary of the resources I believe will be useful in building our technical literacy. I will continuously add resources as I come across them that are targeted towards public education, engagement and transparency. I will not promote commercial partners or for profit organizations in this space as to keep it as unbiased as possible.

I will end my article with a great quote from Dr. Joy Buolamwini: Best-Selling Author of Unmasking AI:

“AI will not solve poverty/ discrimination/ climate change… because these are not technical matters. We cannot use AI to sidestep the hard work of organizing society so that where you are born, the resources of your community, and the labels placed upon you are not the primary determinants of your destiny”
